Description

The MUN is a natural museum located inside the tourist center of the oriented nature reserve of Mount Velino, in Magliano dei Marsi. Opened on February 19th, 2018, the museum has been named after Alfonso Alessandrini, environmentalist and former director of the “mountain economy and forestry” sector of the Minister of Agricolture and Forestry, as well as Chief of the State Forestry Corps. The goal is to sensibilize an audience toward the preservation of the territory, the landscape, and the animal and vegetal species. It is an area dedicated to biodiversity and, most of all, to the oriented natural reserve of Mount Velino and the nordeast area of the Marsica. Every is designed to bring the viewer through a natural journey during which they will explore some activites to preserve some endangered species like the Marsican brown bear and the golden eagle, as well as species that have been newly listed as the griffon, the raven, and the deer. Besides, the goal is also to present a complete picture about the environmental threats that jeopardize the entire ecosystem, as well as the project of CITES department, that works to prevent the illegal trafficking of animals. The museum presents modern technologies that allow the visitor to take a virtual journey among panes, pictures, and videos reproducing the entire biodiversity system. This is why the museum organizes special activities for schoolchildren and big groups of people. Thanks to the collaboration with the Italian Blind People Association from Avezzano, the Museum has been designed to be easily accessible from people with disabilities. Near the building you will find: an equipped rest area, a botanical garden with a copy of the main environments of the protected area, a 2 kilometers long naturalistic path, a CITES storage where are exhibited taxidermized birds (rare and endangered species) seized by the forestry carabinieri.
