Capitignano is a small town part of the mountain community of Amiternina. The town is located at the base of a rocky spur in the high valley of Aterno and is surrounded by lush woods. Part of its territory is located within the National Park and of the Natural Reserve of Campotosto Lake – the biggest lake of the region.
Since there are no written documents, we don’t know a lot about its past. We do know that it was a feud of the Ricci family and that was later annexed into the Contado of Montereale. The feud was later conquered by the Medici, first as part of the Farnese’s estate, and then of the Borboni’s.
The church of San Flaviano, the church of San Domenico, the Ricci Palace and the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli are the most visited spots of the town.
